Despite all the negative response to this announcement, I think that Left 4 Dead 2 sounds great.

Not only do we get a new set of characters in a completely new environment, it will be vastly different in particular ways.

1. Daytime

This will affect many things in-game, specifically that the witch will walk around and  be in infected crowds, which will make fighting infected MUCH more chaotic.

2. Melee Weapons

I for one have always wanted to use a chainsaw in this game and this wish shall finally be fulfilled in Left 4 Dead 2. As well as frying pans and axes, these melee weapons will no doubt destroy normal infected and apparently kill all special infected except for the tank in one hit (excluding special infected we don't know about yet, such as the charger).

3. More diverse infected

I'm sure we've all come to know the different looking normal infected in-game, but according to in-game videos, there will be a lot more black infected, as well as much more variety in clothing, as well as these infected in haz-mat suits, whether they be special or normal infected, I'm not quite sure yet, but it looks interesting.

4. New Special Infected

Now we only know about one of these, The Charger, who looks to be a much faster version of the tank although not as powerful nor as long-living. But Valve has confirmed that there will be more special infected to come.

5. New types of gameplay

In some maps there will be variety as to how the map is setup (in particular the maze/hedge looking area in some of the new videos, by the way the videos I am talking about are on IGN).

Also, the crescendo events are going to be mixed up a bit in that you cannot just wait in a corner until the event is over, some shall require you to push a button to end the event, or are made even harder by a parking lot FULL of cars with car alarms during a crescendo event, which sounds INSANE to me if you consider the wandering witch...

Finale's shall also make a change as one of them has you battling across a bridge to survive rather than waiting for rescue, with different paths.

6. New Guns

Now I think we all know that there's only five guns in Left 4 Dead, and while there may not be a new gun TYPE, persay, there shall at least be more variety in weaponry, with a scoped machine gun, and at least a different type of shotgun from what I've seen.

Not to mention, in the end Valve has stated that they're not abandoning the first game.

I personally welcome the addition of Left 4 Dead 2 and will gladly pay whatever price Valve decides for more enjoyment akin to what I have received from Left 4 Dead already.

They could've added this to the first L4D, could they not?
Also, the new characters had better be equal to or better than the first game's, or they're getting re-skinned.

yeah, the thing that gets me is that they are changing nothing and only adding things

something they really needed to do to the original and not make a whole new game out of it

Nice write up Freeman.  A lot of people feel they should release this as an update but most don't know that valve isn't planing on giving up on the first game.  Plus look how long it took for L4D to come out so it could be years until we see L4D 2 not depending on the release date.

see, thats what you would think, but its not true

the main reason everyone thinks it should be an update and not a new game is because they change NOTHING from the original

all they are doing is adding MORE content, it even says it on the writeup for the game

They probably decided to release L4D: 2 to surprise gamers and to be able to have a game to represent them at E3.  Personally, I agree with many people who say that they could have just added this on to L4D.  They aren't making a new TF for every class update, are they?  =P.

This is the first time I've been slightly disappointed by Valve.  I hope there is something that is crazy different than L4D in this game that makes them similar in almost no way.

I think what it really comes down to is development time. How long did it take them just to update 2 already created campains to versus mode for the last update they did?

Putting together how every many new campains, new weapons, new characters and voice overs simply isnt the type of thing that was covered by the cost of the first game.

imo saying that L4D:2 should just be a patch, is like saying that any game using the unreal 3 engine should have just been update on unreal 3. The engine the same, the ai is going to act the same, the grahpics and story for a new game may be different, but Hey - Its still the same engine right? Why isnt this just a patch for the first.

thats just it, the only thing thats changed is the characters and then they added a bunch of stuff, other than that, there is nothing different about it

so its not like "any game using the unreal 3 engine should have just been update on unreal 3" because each of those games are COMPLETELY different minus the engine

From what I understand, the AI Director is getting an overhaul as well, and the new game will have at least 1 MAJOR difference from L4D.  Alternate Routes.  i read somewhere that the campaigns will be built in such a way that you could play the same level repeatedly, and have to take a different path every time.  This kind of level randomization is not possible in L4D.

Besides all that, can you honestly expect Valve to keep throwing money at L4D and not get anything out of it?  It IS a business after all.  L4D 2 isn't just new content, it's a SHIT-TON of new content.

i think its just a way for valve to get some more money there probably not making a whole lot off of left 4 dead if u consider a lot of people probably tell there friends eh its 2 weeks of fun and then its not worth it  so valve had to create a new one to awe the crowds again so more people buy again

in my honest opinion ill probably buy it because i have money to waste and nothing good to waste it on  and i love new content
